Mel Horowitz lied. Unfortunately, the city is car-centric, with many congestion-related headaches. You will likely experience gridlock, parking woes, and other automotive annoyances. Here are a few accomodation and transportation tips for your stay.
1) Rent a car! We have selected a hotel where parking is free. Try RentalCarMomma or Costco Travel for the best deals.
2) Use Uber! As with many cities, Uber is often cheaper, more reliable and provides for a better user experience than traditional cabs.
3) Be mindful of Halloween parade road closures! Many roads will be closed in observance of the grand, debaucherous annual West Hollywood Halloween parade Saturday evening. For this reason, please try to find accommodations WEST and SOUTH of the Ebell of Los Angeles (wedding venue). Roads will be closed from early Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning. You won't want to find yourself stranded behind a barricade. Thanks to the parade, Uber surges, public transportation nightmares and extortionate parking fees will be in play in the Hollywood/West Hollywood area. Best to avoid areas north and east of the venue.
Important Note: We have not reserved a block at any of these lodging options. The group rate we were offered at our primary option -- Hyatt Place El Segundo -- was significantly higher than the price provided to a guest coming in cold making a single transaction. The block terms specified a minimum guarantee, lack of specificity on room upgrades and an odd clause about fines imposed if visitors made too much noise.
Even though we threw our hands up like the "How About No" bear when we got the contract, we still recommend the Hyatt Place El Segundo.
It is cheap, new and well-located. It provides a generous mix of complimentary amenities such as Wi-Fi, parking, hotel shuttle and breakfast. As always, we recommend that you reserve as soon as you are able. AAA discounts are generous, as are those for AARP members (money-saver tip: AARP membership is only $16 a year and there is no age requirement!).
